Downfield is recognised as one of the finest inland courses in the United Kingdom. It has played host to many events over its long history. The course was a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999 and again in 2007. There are a wide variety of challenges at Downfield with some water in play on no fewer than 7 holes. There are 5 par fives, from the championship tees and the 11th is one of the finest holes on the course.
