Golf in Ireland really began at the end of the 19th century with prestigious clubs like Portmarnock, Royal Dublin, County Sligo and Ballybunion.
Between 1900 and 1920 more than 100 golf courses were built,in the following years there was a slow growth. Clubs like The European Club, Carne, Ballyliffin and Connemara were built.
Then, the boom for Irish golf happened between 1990 and 2005 with more than 150 golf courses built including the famous K Club resort, Mount Juliet, Carton House and Old Head. Nowadays, Ireland – like Scotland – has a huge number of golf courses, 415 in total.
